Ikizere, meaning confidence, is a Baho project made up of women producers. As is the Baho standard, they receive the highest coffee prices in Rwanda as well as an additional payment later in the year. But these single mothers and women-led households aren’t compensated for their domestic and reproductive labor. This isn’t unique to women smallholders in Rwanda, but it forms the basis of their specific adversity.
To this end, Ikizere women now receive health insurance year round. Growing from 20 growers a few years ago to 100+ today the group also forms a platform for self-organizing, with many quality of life improvements already implemented and more in the works.
